QUALIFICATIONS
Ms. Gellen is one of the founding partners of the firm and has been a member of the bar since 1976. She has a wealth of experience in litigation, primarily in the defense of medical practice and medical products cases, as well as in commercial litigation in the state and federal courts including a number of jury trials.
Ms. Gellen was named by Chicago Lawyer magazine as one of Chicago's top twenty tort defense lawyers, and has been selected as an Illinois "Super Lawyer" and a “Leading Lawyer” by her peers and colleagues.
Ms. Gellen was named by Chicago Lawyer Magazine as one of Chicago's top twenty tort defense lawyers, and has been designated by her peers to be both a "Super Lawyer" and among the top civil defense lawyers in Illinois, a "Leading Lawyer" in medical malpractice defense.
Ms. Gellen has a special interest in alternative dispute resolution (ADR) and is a court certified mediator for the Circuit Court of Cook County, IL. She has participated in ADR both as a mediator and as a participant.
PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES
Ms. Gellen concentrates her efforts in the defense of medical malpractice and medical product liability cases as well as commercial litigation. She has tried cases in state and federal courts and has participated in the defense of multi-district litigation, class actions and other mass tort litigation. She has argued appeals in state and federal court. She is admitted to practice in Illinois, Michigan and the Northern District of Illinois.
Ms. Gellen is one of the first members of the Federal Trial Bar. She is a member of the Illinois State Bar Association, the Defense Research Institute and the Illinois Association of Defense Council. She is also a member of the Illinois Association of Healthcare Attorneys and of the Chicago Trial Lawyers.
Ms. Gellen has lectured widely on legal matters, having participated in panel discussions sponsored by the Illinois State Medical Insurance Services, Inc. and Chicago Healthcare Risk Management Society. She has given lectures for the Illinois Association of Hospital Attorneys, and Loyola University School of Law Institute for Health Law, and the Association of Law and Medicine. Ms. Gellen was a featured speaker at the Chicago Bar Association and the DuPage Association of Women Lawyers Fifth Annual Trial Advocacy Seminar. She has been a guest lecture in Fred Lane's Trial Advocacy course, and at Kent Law School. She has been a faculty member of the Illinois Defense Counsel Trial Advocacy College. She has given surgical and medical Grand Rounds at Children’s Memorial Hospital and at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center. She has lectured to the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine, and Northwestern Memorial Hospital Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.
EDUCATION
Ms. Gellen received an A.B. degree with honors from Vassar College, and a J.D. from Albany Law School, Union University, New York. Her last year of law school was completed at the University of Michigan Law School in Ann Arbor.
