FOCUS
Shellie Karno is a nurse attorney, devoting her practice to Health Law. She has counseled hospitals, health systems, academic centers, ambulatory care centers, physician practice groups, and individual physicians in a variety of corporate and health law matters. She has handled numerous regulatory and compliance matters, affiliation agreements, employment matters, hospital/physician contracting issues, medical staff and peer review issues, and litigation management programs.
PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES
Prior to joining Lowis & Gellen, Ms. Karno served as legal counsel for one of the largest public teaching hospital in the country, with responsibility for legal, risk and insurance operations matters. She also served as staff attorney to the General Counsel of the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health Care Organizations, with responsibility for accreditation hearings and appeals, the legal review of standards and review processes, and advising in the development of new business ventures. As an active member of numerous professional organizations, Ms. Karno has several publications to her credit.
EDUCATION
Ms. Karno is a graduate of Loyola University of Chicago School of Law, and received her Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Illinois at Champaign/Urbana. Before earning her law degree, she was an active member of the health care community as a nurse, and received her nursing diploma from Northwestern Memorial Hospital. Admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court, Ms. Karno has been a member of the Illinois Bar since 1988.
